Introduction

Commonly used notes are listed below. Note that notes are NOT listed in numerical order; they are listed in order of importance. For guidance on importance see the document Order of Notes

Example of Individual Notes

504 – Bibliographic Reference Note - Both indicators are blank

• Includes bibliographical references
• Includes bibliographical references (pages 175-180)
• Includes bibliographical references (pages 200-221) and index
  
• Filmography: pages 344-360

(Note that "Includes index" is recorded as a 500 note, when there is no bibliography.)

500 – General Note - Both indicators are blank

• Includes index

505 – Contents Note

Contents Notes can be formatted as basic or enhanced; this quality is noted by Indicator 2. When adding contents use the basic format only. The examples listed below pertain to basic contents that are complete.

First Indicator: Contents can be categorized as complete, incomplete or partial. This attribute is noted in Indicator 1, which shows an appropriate display constant at the beginning of the field when seen in the user interface.

• 0 -- Complete Contents (Displays "Contents:")
• 1 -- Incomplete Contents (Displays "Incomplete Contents:") -- Complete contents are not know. [Usually for multi-volume sets]
• 2 -- Partial Contents (Displays "Partial Contents:") -- Complete contents are know, but not recorded
• 8 -- No display constant displayed

Second Indicator

• 0 -- Basic Contents
• 1 -- Enhanced Contents - Contents are enhanced with subfield tags for title, author, etc.

Example

• The ocean's zones -- Explorer spotlight -- Twilight zone -- Midnight zone -- Mid-ocean vents -- The abyss -- Whale and ship falls -- Trenches

546 – Language Note - Both indicators are blank

• Children’s book in English and Spanish
• Text in English translated from the German.

590 – Local - Both indicators are blank

• African Studies Collection: This book supports the African Studies Program at Kutztown University
• Pennsylvania Collection: This book contains significant historical and/or social information pertaining to Pennsylvania
• KU Popular DVD purchase
• ROTC Collection: This book supports the ROTC Program
