Fall 2019 (2198)

Third Week of Fifteen, Mon. 09-09-19

Wed. 9/11/19

Met with Joe Moyer.

First, if I can recruit some new freshman or sophomore res. assts., then Joe could train them and monitor them at stripping the data.

Second, Joe can take the reviews of the Difficulty Factors paper and use them to do more lit searching. Perhaps some other res. asst. can work on gathering more data using more stimulus sets to improve generalizability. Then, Joe can help me rewrite the paper and submit it to a more specialized journal with him as a secondary author. If that in itself does not result in a publication, then we can also try adding the extra data we’ll try to collect and try to get that published.

I sent Joe the Difficulty Factors paper as submitted to JEP:Applied, plus their reviews.

Sixth Week of Fifteen, Mon. 09-30-19

Friday, 10/04/19

11am

Met with Joe Moyer

Joe will get in touch with John Riter, James Koppenhofer, and Branden Stanley about helping with the stripping of personally identifying information from the response sheets in the StatsSE experiment.

He will contact Branden Stanley about helping with searching the literature for the Algebra Difficulties manuscript. He had tried searching on terms like “start unknown”, but with no success. So he will pursue the strategy of searching backwards and especially forwards on the few papers I cited in the ms, in order to beef it up with more of the newer literature. I suggested that he share with Branden what the strategy should be and perhaps split up the work as they find relevant papers to summarize.

He will keep in touch with the progress on papers to summarize.

Eleventh Week of Fifteen, Mon. 11-04-19

Fri. 11/08/19

Met with Joe Moyer and Brandon Stanley. Discussed Walkington, Ritter, and Nathan (2015) “How readability and topic incidence relate to performance on mathematics story problems in computer-based curricula.”

Explained what our overall goal is: Use criticisms from reviewers to add relevant lit to the Difficulty Factors paper.

Explained how to find main findings of papers.

Explained how to relate them to our paper.

Explained how the Walkington et al. (2015) paper specifically could be used.

They found a new factor (topic incidence) that was related to algebra word problem learning. We found a new factor (incongruence) that was related to algebra equation learning.
