Educational Advancement and Scholarships

Pennsylvania Dutch

Like many peoples, the Pennsylvania Dutch have been absorbed into the general population.  For this reason advancement opportunities are few.

Opportunities do exist for students who are interested in studying the Pennsylvania Dutch culture.  Kutztown University offers the following scholarship.

Amish

In general, the Amish do not have educational advancement opportunities.  Their culture precludes the need for college level education.  The individual Amish communities do provide educational training for their school teachers.

Mennonite

Unlike the Amish, Mennonites do have opportunities for educational advancement.  But, like most church groups, funding is made available for religious studies and missionary work rather than general education.  Opportunities of this type can be found through the individual communities and through programs offered at Mennonite run universities.  The following specialized opportunities are available.

  1. Lark Scholarship Program.  Funds are available for African  American church leaders who are members of the African American Mennonite Association (AAMA).

  2. Student Aid for Non-registrants.  The purpose is of this program is to help replace potential government grants and loans lost by students who for reasons of Christian conscience choose not to register with the U.S. Selective Service System.
