TITLE: Clothesline Math

SUBJECT: Algebra I

TOPIC: Solving equations involving addition and subtraction, definitions of common algebra terms, stating the sign of sums (positive or negative), and a review of verbal expressions

INTERACTIVITY: Students will take turns rolling the die. Each student will be required to answer questions in order to "hang up" their clothes using the provided clothespins on the clotheslines. The students will also practice asking math type of questions.

DIRECTIONS: There must be three players in order to play this game. Players will each roll the die and the player who gets pink goes first, and the rotation continues to the player's left. The first player will take the blue clothespins and its designated clothesline (1), the second player will take the white clothespins and its designated clothesline (2), and the third player will take the pink clothespins and its designated clothesline (3). The first player (the one who rolled the pink) will be first to roll the die. Depending on what color the player rolls, will determine what color question the player will have to answer from the attached packets. The questions are facing towards the players and the answers are facing towards the board.

Green = Hat (State the sign of each sum)
White = Head (Solving equations involving subtraction)
Pink = Shirt (Definitions)
Blue = Pants (Review of verbal expressions)
Yellow = Shoes (Solving equations involving addition)
White = Lose a turn

One of the other two players will then read this question to the player and the player will have a chance to answer it. If the answer is correct, the player will receive this article of clothing and hang it on his/her clothesline and the next player will take his/her turn. If the answer is wrong, the correct answer will be supplied and the piece of clothing will be returned to the back of the packet and the next player will take his/her turn. The objective is to receive one of every article of clothing to hang on the clothesline, this will produce a person (like the one hanging to the right of the board with the green clothespins). If the player rolls the color of an article of clothing which is already on their clothesline, they will have a chance to answer the question. If the answer is correct, they will receive another roll of the die and continue with the above rules. If the answer is incorrect, the next player will take his/her turn. The first player with all of the articles of clothing on his/her clothesline is the winner and will receive a homework pass. Anyone who does not receive a homework pass can continue to play as many times as they wish until receiving a pass. One homework pass per player.

TIME: 15 – 20 minutes

SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION: Clotheslines and clothespins

CREDIT: The winning student will receive a homework pass.
