Re: Research

Hi Matt,

First, send me a copy of your CITI certificate as a .pdf. I attached a copy of mine so you can see what it should look like and how the file should be named. Notice that the date at the beginning of the file name is the date of completion.

Then, go to My Teaching schedule at http://faculty.kutztown.edu/rryan/schedules/sch_spring_2018.html, read the instructions at the top of the page, then use my Google calendar to find a time we can meet. Email me with the time so I can put it on my calendar.

I anticipate that I'll do an IRB change form to add you to my current research project, then train you to help run the Retention Test subjects. We may finish running the Retention Tests barely by the time you're trained, but there will be plenty of other things for you to do.

First Week of Fifteen, Mon. 01-22-18

Mon. 01/22/18

Met with Matt Cohen. Did a change form for the IRB adding him to the study. Brought it to Connie. Did a quick dry-run of the procedure for the Retention test with Matt. He will send me his availability to try to match up a time to train him on the Retention test procedure. I’ll email him once I know for sure what times I’m planning to run Retention tests on a regular basis.

Times that I am free for research

Dr. Ryan,

I looked through my schedule and I am free between 12-2 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays, anytime after 2PM on Tuesdays, and anytime after 11 AM on Thursdays. I hope that would give us some time that matches that matches to begin research.

Re: Times that I am free for research

Hi Matt,

Your Tuesday and Thursday times conflict with my classes. So they could be useful to us once you're independent, but not for training with me. However, the Monday and Wednesday times are good. The OM 297 lab isn't available on those Mon. & Wed. times, but we could run subjects in OM 381 (my lab). So I'll get started on recruiting some subjects for the Mon and Wed of next week. It's only possible to run one subject at a time in OM 381, but that's probably better for your initial training anyway.

I'll also be recruiting subjects to be run by me (and maybe some of my other assistants) in OM 297 on Mondays between 2:30 and 4:30. At some point maybe we can figure out a time (after you're trained in OM 381) to show you how you would run subjects in OM 297. It's not much different. There a a couple of little things to know because you can use more than one computer at a time. Perhaps we could even set up a Saturday to try that.  OM 297 is available after 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so those times would work for you. It would be best if we could find another research assistant to run subjects with you at those times, but it is possible for one person to do it. It's just a little slower if you get multiple subjects showing up at the same time. Also, if at some point you're able to do that, I'd have to book OM 297 for you at those times. Right now I just have it booked for myself on Mondays.

I'll get started recruiting the subjects for Mondays and Wednesdays between 12 and 2 in OM 381 starting next week. Let me know when is the first time you could be there. Then we have to hope we get some subjects to sign up.

I've copied this email to the other students who approached me last semester to get involved with my research program so they know what's going on. They can contact me with their availabilities if they wish and I can start working on getting them trained as well. Some of the research assistants to whom I copied this are veterans who might be able to match up with you to run Retention tests in OM 297 on those Tues., Thurs., times.

Let's all keep in touch,

--- Dr. Ryan

Gage Baughman Research Assistant

Hello Dr. Ryan,

Hope all is well with you! I just confirmed my schedule for this semester ( I have class or tutoring literally 9am-5:30pm each day ).  I am available to help out every day starting at 6pm. The sessions then would be somewhat late at night, so I can understand if you do not need me to run retentions at that time. Just let me know your thoughts or if there is anything else I can do to help out :)

Thank you,

Gage Baughman

Re: Gage Baughman Research Assistant

Gage,

As it looks so far, we might finish all the SE condition subjects soon. If those signed up for next week show up, we'll be down to only needing 2 more SE's.  By the end of next week we could be down to only 12 more of RS subjects. But RS subjects have been signing up at a slower rate. It might turn out that having a variety of different times of day to run them might enable us to get more of them to sign up. In that case, evenings might be useful. I'll let you know if that happens. Thanks for the offer.

Fourth Week of Fifteen, Mon. 02-12-18

Fri., 02/16/18

Met with James. He has info on the Undergrad Research Committee (URC) that he got from the Grants and Sponsored Projects office. We also downloaded and emailed to James an application for the URC. I advised James to do the next steps for APS - register for the convention, get a flight, and hotel accommodations. He is trying to get travel funds form APS, URC, and if necessary, from our Psych Department. I told him to keep in touch with me as to how it was going financially so we can get him more financial help if he needs it. We don’t want him to not be able to go only because of money.

Then we looked for background papers on Self-Explanation (SE) for him. I emailed him:

Chi, Bassok, Lewis, Reimann, & Glaser (1989) the seminal SE paper. Chi and Bassok (1989) Learning from examples via SE Chi and VanLehn (1991) Content of SE’s with my notes Chi et al (1994) Eliciting SE’s

Checked on the latest versions of the data file on the OSF. I had put the file “stats_se_raw_data_2018_03_05.xls” on the OSF. It had lines for all 364 subjects. Adam added data. He emailed me:

Re: File for data coding

Dr. Ryan,

I picked up where you left off with filling in retention tests where they were available. I then filled in the pre-post test and retention test up to number 250. One of the subjects did not fill out one of the answers. OSF changed its name for some reason to  coppyofstats_se_raw_data_2018_03_05-5

-Adam

When I checked the “copyof...” file, I found some problems in the cells with formulas (to turn a or b to 0 or 1 based on the correct key). Apparently, somehow some of the formulas had been moved from one line to another, and some lines had #REF? in them. I fixed this by copying the correct formulas from lines that used the appropriate key to the lines that had been messed up. I then checked the a's and b's and the resulting 0's and 1's by going right back to the original subjects' response sheets. So that is now fixed.

I renamed the file that was fixed and that now contains all of the data that has been entered so far “stats_se_raw_data_2018_03_14.xls”.and put it on the OSF. I left the other files there. But those other files should now not be used. The continuation of the entering of the data should be done with “stats_se_raw_data_2018_03_14.xls”.

I did not quite figure out for sure how those formulas got messed up. But usually when that happens it has something to do with copying and pasting, or deleting and pasting (moving). I also did not figure out for sure why the OSF created a file with the “copyof....” prefix. It seems to me that would happen if one collaborator had a file checked out, and a different collaborator tried to upload a copy of the checked out file.

At any rate, now there is a good file for continuation of data entry (“stats_se_raw_data_2018_03_14.xls”) and there are no checked out files.

Met with James Koppenhofer from 10am to about 4:15pm. We got his application for a KURF travel grant filled out, signed, and sent to Dr. Freihauf. In the process we did further analysis of his data.

After the semester ended

Mon. 6/11/18

Met with James Koppenhofer. He sent me a photo of him at his APS poster in San Francisco.

We figured out how to create formulas in a spreadsheet to calculate the raw data from the raw responses in his pre-testing study for his Independent Study.

In that study:

Experimental:
Cold pre-test for 5 minutes
Use “training” to correct their pre-test for 5 minutes
Post-test

Control:

Use “training” to correct a “pre-test” that was already completed (has 4 incorrect, 1 correct on the ‘how many conditions’ concept and 1 incorrect, 4 correct on the ‘type of conditions’ concept) for 10 minutes
Post-test

James is applying for research assistant positions (e.g., at NYU). He’ll retake the GRE’s and re-apply to grad schools this fall, or maybe a year later.

Fri. 8/03/18

James Koppenhofer is currently working on a project that concerns the success of self-explanation. He has coded part of the Stats SE data from the self-explanation condition for the quality of the SE’s on the last two examples (the ones where the subject works on their own). He found that the quality of the SE’s is positively correlated with the scores on the posttest. It was more strongly correlated for the scores on the items on the posttest about the within versus between subjects conditions. That would be the more difficult question. The correlation was smaller for the scores on the items on the posttest about whether a t-test versus and anova should be used.

He is going to be coding the rest of the data and performing reliability checks on what he gathered maybe with the help of another research assistant. He may also check the correlation between the quality of the SE’s and the retention test scores. Once he gets that figured out he will write a short portion of the larger paper I am writing for the Stats SE project. It will be found in the results section of the project on the OSF.
