Judelka Florival:
Me Identifico
Paintings
The
paintings of Judelka Florival (Barahona, Dominican Republic,
1971) tell the stories of three complex and contrary homelands, all
wracked by questions of identity: Haiti, the US, and the Dominican
Republic. She has shown her work at the
African-American Museum of Philadelphia (“On the Verge…: Young Women
Artists”), the Nexus Foundation for Today’s Art in Philadelphia (“6
African American Artists Select 6 Emerging Artists”), and has taught
Spanish at the University of Penn, Ursinus College, and Collegium
Charter School, among others. “My work,” says
the artist of her paintings, “gives me the freedom to voice my
opinions about what is happening around me. Some
people are still wondering who they are, whereas I never questioned
it. I always knew who I was: Dominican, Haitian,
and American.”
