Use of Personas

 

Basics of Persona Use:

            1. Master the 8 rules of personas (per Cooper).

            2. Purpose of personas is as a guide and a touchstone for design decisions.

            3. Two types of design decisions determined by personas   

                a. Program "functionality", i.e., set of tasks to be performed by users

                b. Program "interactionability"; i.e., how the program interacts with the user

 

Examples of Personas

 

First Example Set:

 

Betty Elms  - A 26 year old single female who just moved to Santa Monica, California after getting a job as an interactive developer.  She is well educated and enjoys reading.  Betty is adjusting to the California scene since she originally lived in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Her apartment resides a few blocks from her job.  She hopes to do some freelance to get some extra money.  She doesn’t have much time to herself because she is constantly working and trying to finish projects by their deadlines.

 

Camilla Rhodes – She is an established graphic designer in San Francisco, CA who is 37 years old and is divorced.  She enjoys learning and expanding her mind to help benefit her art.  She is looking for a way to create a new online portfolio web site.  She has designed her original web site, however, it is not up to par with her art.  She is embarrassed with her current web site.  She likes minimalism. 

 

Adam Kesher – A high school student in Salem, North Carolina.  He is single and 15 years old.  He technology savvy and is online for about 4-5 hours a day searching the Internet.  He is looking to major in computer science hopefully at a near by university.  He communicates with friends online and likes to show off his computer skills.  He can be impatient and usually doesn’t like waiting for anything.  Adam has little tolerance for confusing designs and lessons.  He learns by example and often emulates results. 

 

Neal Domgaard – A 59 year old retired programmer from Houston, Texas.  He has 2 kids.  A daughter that is 24 years old and a son that is 20 years old. He lives with his wife in a ranch house in the suburbs. He tries to keep up with the latest technology and not get behind with the latest gadgets his kids have.  He has a short memory and has to often re-educate himself.  He learns best visually.  He enjoys programming in his free time.
