Examples of Questions from Graduate Section of the Exam

Questions from the graduate section of the Exam will be similar to those given here.  The list below is only a sampling.  If time permits, I will post additional examples of the types of questions that will be on the Exam.

 

1. Give a theory for why the job exit times jump from 265,352  to 3428499 in the run of Project #3.  Give supporting arguments for your theory.  What other theories are possible?

 

2. What is thrashing?  What conditions cause (or contribute to) the occurrence of thrashing?  What measures may be useful for detecting the occurrence of thrashing?  If thrashing is detected, what measures can be taken to eliminate it?  Which do you think would be the most effective?  Why?

 

3. What results from Projects #2 and #3 illustrate the principle of locality?  Be specific.
