Video-Recording Lectures onto an iPod

Abstract. This article provides a guide to setting up a hardware apparatus in a classroom for video-recording lectures onto an iPod in real time. The author has been providing students with audio podcasts of his lectures for the past few years. The project described in this article extends his podcast by adding a video component. The acquisition of the necessary hardware was supported jointly by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics..

In December of 2005, the author presented the first CET workshop on how to produce an audio podcast of classroom lectures and provide it to students through RSS. In order to reach even a broader clientele in KU’s online course offerings, the next natural step was to offer video-recording of lectures through podcast. To achieve wider adoption among interested faculty, this article proposes a hardware setup that requires minimum user involvement.
