Background Needed in MAT 115

Question: What are the prerequisites for MAT 115 (Precalculus)?

Yours Truly answers: The following paragraph was taken directly from the official description of the course from the KU website:

MAT 115 - Precalculus Mathematics 3 sh
This course is designed to give students a thorough review of the mathematics background needed for calculus courses. The course covers all the topics listed in the descriptions of MAT 105 and MAT 106. A graphing calculator is required for this course. It is not open to anyone who already has received credit for either MAT 105 or MAT 106. Three years of high school mathematics in algebra and trigonometry is the prerequisite for MAT 115.

MAT 115 reviews what we already know in algebra & trigonometry. It is not intended for those who have no or only a little background in algebra and/or trigonometry, hence would have to learn the topics for the first time. For those, MAT 105 and/or MAT 106 are well-suited.

It is important that we give ourselves a chance to succeed in mathematics by learning new concepts in sequence. Taking a review course when many concepts are foreign will not work.

In particular, if you have no or only a little background in trigonometry, our advice is to take MAT 106. Please heed this advice, so that you will be successful in the end.
