Mexico Sketchbook: Learning through Direct Observation
This class is taught in Mexico. The itinerary will include Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Mexico City. A hands-on course, each student will complete a sketchbook documenting his or her personal response to the travel experience. Through direct observation students will explore their personal relationship with the destination and construct a meaningful document of their travels.
Prerequisites: Drawing 1, or permission of the instructor.
Credits variable: 1 to 3 credits pending approval by KU curriculum committee
Itinerary Details:
Querétaro:
- 3 nights at the Hotel Meson Carolina.
- Querétaro, founded in 1531, is a city full of history.
- Visit sites including the Museum of Art, a restored 17th century monastery and the chapel marking the spot where Emperor Maximilian was executed.
Guanajuato:
- 8-night home-stay.
- Many Mexicans say this silver-mining town high in the Sierra Madres Mountains is the most beautiful colonial city in Mexico.
- Home-stay with a Mexican family in Guanajuato, includes 2 meals daily.
- 5 classes in Spanish language & Mexican culture taught at Instituto Cervantes.
- Field trips include museums, an underground silver mine, and artists’ studio.
- Optional mountain biking excursion (added cost)
Mexico City, New for 2010:
- 4 nights stay
- Templo Mayor, archeological ruins.
- Day-long excursion to pyramids of Teotihuacan.
- Tour the National Palace & see Diego Rivera’s murals.
- Visit Palace of Fine Arts
- Optional tour: Frida Kahlo’s Blue House. (added cost)
Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5. Students are selected on a point system based on total number of credits completed, with additional points for Spanish language study, possession of a valid passport, and a brief application explaining your interest in the course.
