This course focuses on the application of mathematical concepts and methods to problems that arise for students who major in Business or Computer Science. The topics include a review of algebraic concepts and problem solving, systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, linear programming with graphical and simplex method solutions, and probability. A graphing calculator is required for this course, preferably a TI-83 or TI-84.
HOMEWORK: Daily homework assignments will be given and you are expected to have assignments completed by the following class. They will not be collected. Class time will be devoted to answering questions about the homework assignments.
EXAMS: There will be 5 exams during the semester. Each will be worth 100 points and will be announced at least one week in advance. Only the best 4 exam grades will count. If you have an emergency on the day of an exam, you must contact me immediately. “Make-up exams” are typically given during final exam week. There will be a cumulative final exam worth 150 points given on Wed. May 7th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
COURSE GRADES:
The course grade will be based on your average out of a total of 550 possible points: 400 exam points and 150 final exam points.
TUTORING: If you are having trouble in this course, it is important that you seek help immediately. Mathematics is a subject that builds upon itself and once you get lost, things will get progressively more difficult. I would be more than happy to help you during office hours or during another scheduled time. I also encourage you to work together with other students in the class. Please do not hesitate to seek help when you need it!
In accordance with University policy, you are expected to attend all classes. Attendance will be taken at every class. In the event that your course grade falls on the borderline between two letter grades, I will use your attendance record to determine whether or not to assign the higher grade.
