KU CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: This course is a study of the physical properties of the oceans which include: mass and energy budgets; the cause, nature, measurement, analysis and prediction of tides, currents and waves, and basic instrumentation used in field work. Prerequisites: MAR 110-111, one year each of physics, algebra and trigonometry, and one semester of calculus, or consent of the instructor.

SCHEDULING: Class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 - 9:50AM in Grim 307.

COURSE TEXTS: Ocean Circulation, prepared by Angela Colling for the U.K.'s Open University. Other texts are utilized as needed. In addition, check my Blackboard site for supplementary notes, readings and homework assignments.

COURSE GRADE BASED ON: three exams (10% each), problem sets and homework assignments (30%), a 10-page term paper and a formal presentation to the class about the term paper (20%), and discussions of papers from the scientific literasture (20%).
