020/021. INTRODUCTION TO GEOLOGY (FALL 2006)

CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: An introduction to the study of the
Earth, physical geology includes the study of the formation of common
rocks and minerals, of the structure of the surface of the earth, and
of geological processes that create the surface landscape. Human considerations
such as energy, mineral deposits and environmental hazards are also examined.
Laboratory work includes the study of rocks and minerals, and the study
of topographic maps and landforms.
SCHEDULING: Lecture meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00-9:50, in Boehm
261. For lab section scheduling, consult the Registrar).
You must register for both the class and the lab.
COURSE TEXT: Earth, An Introduction to Physical Geology written
by E.J. Tarbuck and F.K. Lutgens (Prentice Hall, 2004); LAB TEXT: The
lab text is written by KU's own Dr. Kurt Friehauf.
Textbooks and lab manuals are available in the KU bookstore.
COURSE GRADES BASED ON: four exams, including the final (15% each), and
the cumulative laboratory grade (40%).
OTHER INFORMATION: This
course does not satisfy major, concomitant or specialization requirements
for Secondary Education Science and/or Liberal Arts Science Majors. For
