I'm always surprised when
tectonically-stable regions have rugged
topography. Sometimes I wish I knew more about geomorphology
so I could better appreciate the landforms around me.

We passed through several small villages
along the way. Some houses were low, ranch-style
affairs, some looked pretty poor, but some were big,
fancy mansions, too. Namibia is a land of great
diversity. Again, I wish we had more time to stop
and meet people along the way. That will be a
mission for our next trip!

Most river beds were dry at this time of
year, but some still had a bit of water. I'm told
the plains here are carpeted in green during the rainy
season.

Many scenes along the road reminded me
of Arizona and New Mexico in the United States (two of
my favorite states!) Some of the flatter regions
had small mesas and buttes.
|
There were also some long stretches of
broad, dry plains. Driving across these areas gave
one time to think.

By dusk, we entered the Little Karas
Mountains south of Keetmanshoop. Scenic mountains,
to be sure, but our field area was even more striking!
