Course Descriptions:

CDE 140 - Digital Translation

This is a new sophomore level core course developed to give all CD students an introduction to standards-based web design. Students will learn the basics of interface design and web site organization. Focus will be on developing a clear understanding of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and how they are used to build a standards compliant web site. Students will also learn to properly prepare text, images and media for web deployment, how to set up a web site and publish files via FTP.
Prerequisites: Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses: CDE 022 Introduction to Digital Design I; CDE 122 Introduction to Digital Design II; CDE 130 Typography; CDE 147 Visual Thinking; CDE 147 Visual Thinking; or permission of the instructor.

CDE 277 - Interactive Design II: Multimedia

This is the second course in the Interactive Design concentration. Building on the skills developed using HTML and CSS in Interactive Design I, this course will focus on more advanced design and interaction using Javascript, as implemented through the jQuery library, and various AJAX technologies. HTML5 and CSS3 will also be introduced as the core structures of near-future web design.
Prerequisites: Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses: CDE 022 Introduction to Digital Design I; CDE 122 Introduction to Digital Design II; CDE 130 Typography; CDE 141 Visual Translation; CDE 147 Visual Thinking; or by permission of the instructor.

CDE 385 - Senior Interactive Design Seminar: Advanced Web Publishing

In this course students will publish an online magazine using WordPress as a content management system. Students will design an appropriate WordPress theme and become familiar with the PHP programming language and the concepts and techniques of content management using a database.
Prerequisites: Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses: CDE 022 Introduction to Digital Design I; CDE 122 Introduction to Digital Design II; CDE 147 Visual Thinking; CDE 141 Visual Translation; CDE 220 Print Media Production; CDE 231 Advanced Typography; CDE 276 Interactive Design I or permission of the instructor.

CDE 386 - Senior Interactive Design Seminar:
Web Applications (Multimedia)

In this course students design web-based applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript. The focus is on the relationship between visual design and functionality. Students will select an appropriate application for use online, design the user interface and code the application to function according to a set of design goals established when the project is conceptualized. Javascript will be implemented with a focus on the jQuery library and the plug-ins and interface enhancements it provides or supports.
