Becherhaus Hike: Descent after the storm, crossing edge of Ubeltalferner, July 2000 Becherhaus Hike (July 2000).
Three people undertook this hike: Sandy Clevenstine, Bob Schoch, and myself. Becherhaus is a hütte (small hut) perched precariously on a peak in Italy near the Austria-Italian border. An unexpected late afternoon snow storm made our climb particularly difficult. As nightfall approached, the storm intensified. We were too far from the nearest hütte below us to turn back. Sandy set a determined, steady pace toward the top. As a result, we won our race against the approaching darkness.
