Walls of Fès

Walls built of clay,

the redness of earth tempered

by both heat and age:

color of strength,

prism of zeal,

history makes itself,

and of itself a city

of spirit and color and flesh,

an ardor against the encumbrance of walls,

a triumph against the heaviness of earth

and heart that can divide themselves in two.

Fès glows, brilliant before the sun’s brilliant eyes.

It speaks to the world through its walls.

It dazzles its own universe within.

It gleams, with a pride

that welcomes and warms,

and insulates.
