Haikus for a Modern World

You bypass my doubts,

roguish wind, when do you stop?

“No turn on red” here

Flyers on windshields

fall fast to the ground or fly,

baffling autumn leaves

Voluptuous vines

cling to aging, rundown walls,

to spite slimy men

Squirrels walk away,

gold leaves leave the naked trees;

snow wraps them in coats

Eclipse weaves around

black, sure-footed Explorer:

like tiny Mirage

When your thoughts travel,

cross the bridge when you get there.

Weight limit:  10 tons

On Eagle Point Road

speed limit is forty-five

for birds that are cars

Curves, waves, an ocean

of trees and cascades of hair:

I’m driving top down

Parents’ threat to kids:

Free super saver shipping

over 25

boys that lure with promises,

good while supplies last

The sky paints its face,

lipstick, candy drip from trees:

fall’s last big party

Spiced scents of heather

spin blissfully with the clouds,

I’m having some beer

Microwave counts down,

My food will be ready soon—

You patiently wait
